Through a notification dated 23 August 2016 the FSSAI has made some amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations 2011. FSSAI has termed this a final notification on the amendment relating to condition for sale of blended edible vegetable oil. Once notified in the official gazette this amendment will be called the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) First Amendment Regulations, 2016.
In the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations 2011 in regulation related to ‘Prohibition and Restriction on sale of certain products’ in the category ‘Restrictions relating to conditions for sale’ (2.3.14) the FSSAI regulation says that Blended Edible Vegetable Oil shall not be sold in lose form. It shall be sold in package weighing not more than 15 litres. The container with blended edible vegetable oil shall be tamper proof. It shall also not be sold under the common or generic name of the oil used in the blend but shall be sold as “Blended Edible Vegetable Oil”. The sealed package shall be sold or offered for sale only under AGMARK certification mark bearing the label declarations as provided in the Regulations besides other labelling requirements as prescribed under Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) regulations, 2011.
The FSSAI has amended the word to be used for the weight of the blended edible vegetable oil package. Instead of 15 litres the packaging of Blended Edible Vegetable Oil will now weigh not more than 15 kilograms. In place of litres the word kilograms has been substituted. Blended Edible Vegetable Oil manufacturers will accordingly have to adjust the packaging so that it contains 15 kilograms of the above mentioned oil instead of 15 litres. The labelling on the package of the Blended Edible Vegetable Oil will also be changed to display 15 kilograms.
The FSSAI had made this amendment notification available to the public through the gazette on 14 June 2016 and had asked for suggestions and objections. The FSSAI received no objections and suggestions and since this is the final notification the moment the amendment is published in the Official Gazette, Blended Vegetable Edible Oil manufacturers will have to implement the amendment.
