A private hospital in Coimbatore is found to be accountable for allowing the sale of misbranded product hence liable for disciplinary action for not conforming to the guidelines defined for providing the safe medicines for human consumption by the food & drug administration. The pharmacy of this multi-specialty hospital was selling a health supplement being prescribed under the weight loss program by the physician doctors of the hospital.
The State Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) has already verified the samples from one of it’s referral labs and later on sent the faulty product for final analysis to the apex body on food safety and standards – ‘FSSAI’. The authority will frame a chargesheet against the hospital for strict legal action.
The issue was escalated when a resident of the city brought a weight loss product for his wife which was recommended by one of the doctors of the hospital. The health supplement was promoted as a weight loss remedy for keeping people Slim & Trim. The city resident brought the product from Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital pharmacy. The doctor who prescribed the product course, also owns the manufacturing unit of same health supplement being sold in the pharmacy of the hospital.
The health supplement was not even inadequate in health benefits rather identified as to be unsafe for human consumption. The faulty product sample has been sent for final analysis to Kolkata where FSSAI will eventually will give a final nod for further action on the issue.
The resident had filed litigation against the private hospital about 2 and half months back and now the regulatory body is targeting the hospital administration and the manufacturers of the misbranded product for taking strict action.
