Italian Ferrero Group May Shift Investment to China
While the Ferrero Group had set up a plant in India it is planning to shift investment to China because of delays in approvals from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). They had already invested Rs.500 crore but the “make in India” is no longer an option says the company, as delay in approvals has held up its fresh product launches and portfolio expansion. China is likely to gain from this delay as now Ferrero is likely to redirect its investment of a further Rs.500 crore into China instead of India. Headquartered in Pune, Ferrero India has a plant in Baramati, with 3,000 employees, mostly women.
The Ferrero Group feels that instead of encouraging the food processing industry, FSSAI regulations are a barrier for expansion. The company needs approval if they have to launch any food product beyond the 370 products for which standards are laid out. Since the entire industry is suffering there has been a meeting of various CEOs with the Secretaries of the food processing and health ministry to highlight these issues.
