FSSAI Publishes Notices for Comments and Suggestions from WTO-SPS Committee Members for a number of Proposed Standards and from Stakeholders for BIS Proposed Standards
- The FSSAI has asked WTO-SPS Committee Members to offer objections, comments, suggestions or views on the draft amendments for Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 in order to prescribe Standards for Malt Extract, Expeller Pressed Flour, Lactic Acid, Baker’s Yeast, Ascorbic Acid, Calcium Propionate, Sodium Metabisulphite and Potassium Metabisulphite.
- These same proposed additions are also being called draft notification of BIS proposed Standards. The FSSAI has, therefore, also called for claims, suggestions views, comments etc. from stakeholders within a period of 30 days from the issue of this notification on these BIS proposed standards.
The proposed amendments deal with additions to the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.
In the section dealing with “Cereals and Cereal Products” standards have been proposed for Malt Extracts as these were not a part of the earlier standards but have been added now. In the same section another category has been added for proposed standards namely Expeller Pressed Groundnut Flour.
In the section dealing ‘Standards for Additives’ a new standard is proposed to be inserted called ‘Baker’s Yeast.” The proposed standards have highlighted that yeast will be of two types
(a) Baker’s Yeast, Compressed
(b) Baker’s Yeast, Dried.
Standards have also been proposed for Lactic Acid (Food Grade), Ascorbic Acid (Food Grade) Calcium Propionate (Food Grade), Sodium Metabisulphite (Food Grade), Potassium and Metabisulphite (Food Grade) will also have standards once these proposed standards are notified and regularised. Presently these products do not have standards in the FSS (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. These new proposed standards will indicate characteristics and requirements in these products, standards of hygiene in preparation of the products, the additives permitted, levels of contaminants , toxins and residues and also packaging and labelling standards.
- In a second notice FSSAI has called for suggestions, views, comments etc. from WTO-SPS Committee members for Standards for Alcoholic Beverages. The standards have been proposed for all types of distilled and un-distilled alcoholic beverages.
On the two draft amendments of Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations 2011 and on the Standards for Alcoholic Beverages, WTO – SPS Members have to offer their suggestions and comments within a period of 60 days from the date of issue of these draft amendments.
