FSSAI has Gazette notified the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Third Amendment Regulations, 2019 relating to new standards of chia oil and its fatty acid composition.
The draft Food Safety and Standards (FoodProducts Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2018 but now the FSSAI has further amended the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.
These regulations may be called the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Third Amendment Regulations, 2019. They shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
In the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, in regulation2.2: FATS, OILS AND FAT EMULSIONS in the category 2.2.1 OILS the standards for Chia oil have been added.
30. Chia oil means the oil expressed from the clean and sound seeds of chia (Salvia hispanica) without the application of heat which shall be clear from rancidity, suspended or other foreign matter, separated water, added colouring or flavouring substances and mineral oil and conforms to the following parameters and limits

|5.||Unsaponifiable matter||Not more than 1.5%|
Note- Test for Argemone oil shall be negative.”;
In sub-regulation2.2.7 FATTY ACID COMPOSITION in Table 1 relating to “Fatty Acid Composition” the Fatty oil composition for Chia_oil has been added which is as follows.
