The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has recently proposed the ‘Draft’ Food Safety and Standards (Food or Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Foods for Special Dietary Uses, Foods for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Foods, and Novel Food) Regulations, 2015. These Draft Regulations cover foods containing prebiotic / probiotic ingredients, foods for special dietary uses (other than infant foods and those taken under medical advice), food or health supplements, foods for special medical purposes, nutraceuticals, novel foods etc. These are also called non-standardized foods and which are covered under Section 22 of the FSS Act, 2006. These are in contrast to the food articles for which standards are available and which are called standardized food products.
These draft regulations will be finalized as soon as all the comments are received by FSSAI from all stakeholders within the stipulated time limit and incorporated. After this, the final notification will be issued in the Official Gazette of India and the regulations shall come into force w.e.f. the subsequent 1st January or 1st July of the year subject to a minimum 180 days from the date of final notification in the Official Gazette.
