Private Companies Bag 10 Mega Food Park Projects
To give a fillip to the food processing industry the Government has allocated 10 mega food park projects to private players. Some players like Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. will set up the mega park in Kutch, Gujarat, Ruchi Acroni Industries project will develop the food park at Dewas, Madhya Pradesh while Amarpali Group firm Mums mega food park will be at Buxar, Bihar. Besides 10 private players 7 state governments will also develop mega food parks.
The total project costs for the 17 mega parks would be around Rs.2, 300 crores. The Central government would allocate Rs.850crores while some would come from the food processing units to be set up inside the parks. Mega parks will facilitate the establishment of strong food processing industry backed by supply chain, collection centres, central processing centre (CPC) and cold chain infrastructure. They are likely to employ 80,000 people and more than 5 lakh farmers would benefit from these projects.
Wal-Mart India Opens 10 Wholesale Online Stores in India
Jammu becomes the 10 city in India where Wal-Mart recently launched its e-commerce facility for its wholesale trading partners. Wal-Mart now operates its B2B ‘Best Price’ Modern Wholesale store for members in nine cities in India since its inception in 2014. Registered members operate from the website www.bestprice.in.
Wal-Mart will be launching an e-commerce platform in Amritsar also later this year to complete the Punjab phase as it already has this facility in Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Bathinda in Punjab. Other trading platforms are in Lucknow, Hyderabad, Guntur, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Zirakpur.
McCain Foods Poised to take Advantage of Growing Frozen Food Sector
Launched in 1998 McCain Foods has more than 10,000 outlets in India and in the next five years plans to expand to 50,000 outlets. The frozen food and appetizer company has recently launched a number of products that cater to Indian tastes and so have increased their range of innovative and profitable menu solutions for every segment of food service business. New products in the veggie category are Veggie Fingers for its institutional customers, in addition to the latest ‘veggie’ range of McCain Veggie Nuggets and Veggie Burger Patty.
Two-third of their business comes from institutional sales and customers are leaders in national and international QSR and HORECA and retail and export make up rest of their sales is made from retain and exports. To connect with institutional buyers and to promote their products McCain organizes HORECA meets, participates in B2B shows, does print advertising and provides one on one sampling for institutional customers.. The frozen foods market in India is poised for growth and McCain are delighted they already have a foothold.
Mother Dairy to Enter Branded Pulses Market
In the coming fiscal year, Mother Dairy is looking at a turnover of over Rs.700 crores from its horticulture business as there is likely to be an upsurge in the sale of pulses. Mother Dairy’s horticultural revenue has so far come from sale of vegetables and fresh fruit, pulp and packaged foods and jams and sauces and they have recently added pulses to their ‘Safal’ portfolio.
The company that sells milk, dairy products and edible oils under the ‘Dhara’ brand are all set to enter the branded pulses market. Presently pulses are being sold only at ‘Safal’ outlets but soon other retailers will be able to sell them. Mother Dairy is all set to enter new markets in Bihar, Uttarakhand, Assam and Jammu and Kashmir. The company is presently selling 14 types of pulses in one kilogram packs and will provide competition to the Tata group’s ‘Tata-i-Shakti’ that was the first player to enter the branded pulses market.
PepsiCo to introduce its New Hydration Drink in India
As of 1st April 2015, humidity prone Tamil Nadu and Kerala will be the first states in India to sample PepsiCo’s new international brand ‘7UP Revive’. As the name suggests the drink will bring relief to people from the summer heat as it claims to have vitamins and electrolytes that energise. Available in 500ml bottles PepsiCo aims to target those in the 35 and above age group with ‘7UP Revive.’ Depending on results of the test launch the company would take the new beverage to other states.
Presently ‘7UP Revive’ is available in Vietnam and Malaysia. The active hydration drink is part of the new category of beverages that the company is starting. Along with providing new beverages PepsiCo also aims to educate the consumers about the importance of replenishing the body with minerals that are lost though sweat in the summer heat.
Amazon to Launch First Online Kirana Store at Bengaluru
Amazon in partnership with mom-and-pop shop is all set to launch their pilot online Kirana store. The e-commerce major will first operate the store in Bengaluru and then continue throughout the nation. This is the first time that Amazon is launching something that is country specific to India. Grocery e-tailing has so far been confined to bigwigs like Big Basket. There is wide scope in this arena as the food and grocery retail business spending stood at $370 billion in 2104-15.
Amazon will operate kirana stores that will connect buyers to merchants via mobile option only. Orders will be processed within two to four hours and delivered home. All kirana stores that wish to part of the new ecosystem with Amazon as sellers will upload an online catalogue on the Amazon platform. Besides providing backend technology Amazon would also provide logistic for delivery of products in partnership with the kirana stores and third party deliverers.
