Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad will be India’s first Clean Street Food Hub
Under the FSSAI’s Clean Street Food Project, Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad will be declared as the country’s first clean street food hub. The state Food Drug and Control Administration (FDCA) has confirmed that the project was in the final stage of implementation, and soon the frequented tourist hub would be declared as a clean street food hub. Gujarat has become the first state to undertake the Clean Street Food Project and a second hub will come up at Law Garden. In Ahmedabad, these two popular places, known as “Khau Galli” will soon be known for becoming the first clean street food hubs.
The auditor has already visited the two hubs for inspection and after the minor rework the auditor has again been invited and the state Food Drug and Control Administration (FDCA) is confident of Kankaria Lake becoming India’s first clean street food hub which will also have the FSSAI logo as a value addition. There are about 66 approved street food vendor stalls in that area. Since 2012, FDCA has been working to train the vendors to maintain food hygiene and safety. All the vendors are following the necessary procedures, including wearing apparel, hand and head gloves, using packaged water supplied by packaged water companies on the FDCA behest, maintaining cleanliness around the stall, using carpets, etc.
Starbucks Introduces Nitro Cold Brew in India
Starbucks has introduced Nitro Cold Brew on tap as part of its coffee innovation, in India. Made from the finest coffee beans, each cup requires 48 hours to make and results in a super-smooth, naturally-sweet coffee with a velvety, creamy texture. Nitro Cold Brew is convenient for today’s fast-paced, instant and on-demand world but it also allows customers to enjoy small-batch, slow-steeped coffee. Cold Brew coffee is mixed with nitrogen to deliver a totally new cold coffee experience as it is right out of a tap and served unsweetened without ice.
Starbucks’ other offering is the Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew which is made with Starbucks Cold Brew over ice and topped with a house-made vanilla sweet cream, the sweet cream floats on top of the beverage before slowly cascading down for an eye-catching effect. Both the coffees offer a sensory experience which customers will enjoy fully. While Starbucks Cold Brew is available across all Starbucks stores in India, Starbucks Nitro Cold Brew is currently available in five stores across India – Mumbai (Kamala Mills); Bengaluru (Jaya Nagar); Delhi (Green Park), Noida (DLF Mall of India) and Kolkata (Park Mansions).
Parag Collaborates with ‘ColoPlus AB’ to Strengthen Health and Nutrition Portfolio
Parag Milk Foods Ltd is collaborating with the Swedish research organization ColoPlus AB. They will launch their first 100 percent natural immunity booster called GO Colo Power in India. This will enable Parag Milk Foods to strengthen its offerings in the health and nutrition segment and add to its leadership in the value-added products category. Parag will become the first company to create a unique colostrum-based health food, which provides long-term immunity not just to people who are ill but will also build preventive immunity with its high immunoglobulin content
Colo Power will be available in 200gms packaging and will be priced at Rs.750 and can be bought from e-commerce platforms and all metro cities. Colo Power is enriched with immunoglobulin and probiotics and has the same goodness equivalent to that of a mother’s first milk as it is made from the first milk of cows after calving. Go Colo Power will be in powder form and can be mixed into porridge. It contains high colostrum values which help fight diseases like AIDS, cancer, diarrhea, etc. that reduce the body’s immune-defensive powers. The use of colostrum helps to build long-term immunity and improves and strengthens the digestive system and with the Swedish research company’s patented technology, it provides much higher absorption than other products in the market.
PE Funds, Other Companies Race to Acquire Kraft Heinz India
Private equity funds like Blackstone and Carlyle as well as companies like Abbot, Emami, Wipro, Consumer Care, Zydus Wellness and ITC are all in the race to buy the consumer division of the Kraft Heinz Co. in India. Slow growth in the consumer healthcare market is forcing multinationals to quit. The sale of Kraft Heinz in India could include the entire consumer healthcare business which includes top-selling products like Complan, Glucon-D and Sampriti Ghee besides Nycil.
JP Morgan and Lazard are working with Kraft Heinz to find a buyer for the deal which is valued at around one billion dollars. Kraft Heinz is controlled by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and has reported better than expected profits in May. The decision to sell the consumer business is part of the merger between Kraft and Heinz in 2015. Kraft Heinz has 13 different brands with $500 million each in annual sales. Kraft Heinz has an annual sales of around Rs.1,800crore and Complan alone accounted for 40 to 45 percent of sales in FY2017.
Devyani International to Invest Rs.1000 Crore Ahead of IPO
Devyani International Ltd, promoted by RJ Corp, holds the franchise rights for over 350 KFC and Pizza Hut stores in India. Now it plans to invest Rs.1000 crore to expand its operations and may include the acquisition of some of the KFC outlets that are operated by American chain Yum! Brands and which owns the two brands. On the global level, Yum! Brands are transferring its owned outlets to licensed holders as part of its strategy to form an asset-light business model.
As part of its talent acquisition, Devyani has also hired the former KFC India managing director Rahul Shinde as executive director as it is looking to accelerate its presence in this sector. Shinde was global CFO for Yum’s Taco Bell Business and has been hired to head KFC operations in India, Nepal, and Nigeria and will also see to the new acquisitions of international brands under Devyani like Costa Coffee and TWG Tea. The company is also preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) as part of its expansion move. In the past six months, it has already begun to acquire smaller KFC and Pizza Hut stores from independent franchisees. Devyani is looking to setting up 100 to 200 stores each for both KFC and Pizza Hut in the next 4 to 5 years.

Suvarna Kokan Food Mall Aims for 100 Stores in Mumbai
Mumbai based Suvarna Kokan Foundation has rolled out a movement, Suvarna Kokan Food Mall. Suvarna is well-known for its nutritional, hygienic chicken which is sourced directly from farmers across Maharashtra. Suvarna also follows the government’s policy of curbing the misuse of antibiotics and other malpractices in poultry trade, generates employment and believes in giving a boost to the economy of the country by creating micro businesses for urban youth. Started in 2008, the foundation has been working closely at ground level with farmers across Maharashtra by sensitizing them and exposing them to newer businesses like fish farming, mushroom farming, goatery and more, thus reaching out to 1 lakh farmers so far.
In its new mass campaign, they will set up 100 stores of ‘Suvarna Kokan Food Mall. The campaign is hyper local but has its focus on hygiene, best breed, and training of the staff. The Staff are encouraged to use alternative antibiotic-free growth promoters such as herbal supplements, permitted probiotics and better farm management practices. In the first phase, around 20 such outlets have already become operational at Dadar, Mulund, Dombivali, Ghatkopar, Kurla, Navi Mumbai and more. Every Suvarna Kokan Food Mall houses a fully automated poultry cutting machine, keeping the hygiene factor in the mind. The various breeds made available at the stores include original deshi, gavraan along with the usual broiler chicken. The stores will also stock Konkan specialties like masalas, kokum concentrate, cashew-nuts, etc. in select outlets.
