
Through a notification dated 7 November 2017, the FSSAI proposes to make amendments in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulation, 2017, so as to include provision for additional additives in various food categories. Once published in the Official Gazette, these amendments will be called the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2017.
The first amendment proposed is in Appendix A in Table 1 under the heading USE OF FOOD ADDITIVES IN FOOD PRODUCTS (IV) for food category Un-ripened Cheese products (1.6.1) for food additive Annatto the INS number will be 160b(i), 160b(ii) and not 160b.
In Table 2 titled ‘Fats and oils, and fat emulsions’ in the food category system pertaining to Vegetable oils and fats the entries (2.1.2) “Natural and synthetic tocopherol and ASCORBYL ESTERS and their readings will be replaced with the following

In Table 4 titled ‘Fruits and vegetables’ under the Food Category System pertaining to Food category Frozen Vegetables (including mushrooms and fungi, roots and tubers, pulses and legumes, and aloe vera) seaweeds, nuts and seeds (4.2.2.1) after the food additive SULFITES and the entries relating to it some more food additives have been proposed to be added which are as follows

In Table 5, titled ‘Confectionary’ under the Food Category System pertaining to Cocoa and chocolate products (5.1.3) changes have been proposed for Food Additive CHLOROPHYLLS AND CHLOROPHYLLINS, COPPER COMPLEXES the Maximum recommended level “6 mg/kg” will be replaced with “700mg/kg”
In Table 6, titled Cereals and cereal products under the Food Category System 6.5, pertaining to cereals/pulses and starch based desserts the food additive “Carboxymethylcellulose” will be replaced with the following
- Sodium carboxymethylcellulose(Cellulose Gum)
- Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, enzymatically hydrolyzed (Cellulose Gum, enzymatically hydrolyzed)
In Table 12 titled Salts, spices, soups, salads and protein products’
- In the Food Category System Salt (including edible common salt, iron-fortified salt, iodized salt) (12.1.1) the food additive “Sodium 300ydroly silicate” will be replaced with the food additive “Sodium aluminosilicate”
- In the Food Category System Mixes for soups and broths (12.5.2) food additive “Sodium 303ydroly silicate” will be replaced with food additive “Sodium aluminosilicate”
- In the Food Category System ‘Sauces and like products’ (12.6) to the existing food additives, the following food additive has been included

- In the same category for Food Additive “Nitrogen,” the INS No. will be 941 and not 918
In food category system (14.1.4), pertaining to Water-based flavored drinks, including “sport” “energy” or “electrolyte” drinks and particulate drinks, includes carbonated fruit beverages, carbonated beverages with fruits
- For Food Additive QUILLAIA EXTRACTS under column NOTE the entries “293, 132, 168” will be replaced with “293, 132”
- In the same category for Food Additive Alitame, under column NOTE the following entry shall be inserted “Permitted, except for vending machines”
- In the same category Food Additive Neotame, the following entry shall be inserted under column Note, Permitted, except for vending machines”
- In the same category for Food Additive Sucralose (Trichlorogalactosucrose) under column NOTE “Permitted, except for vending machines”
Under the same table in Food Category System 14.1.4.2 pertaining to Non-carbonated water-based flavored drinks including punches and ades, ginger cocktail (ginger beer and ginger ale), thermally processed fruit beverages/fruit drinks/ready to serve fruit beverages food additives after CAROTENOIDS and the entries relating thereto, the following will be omitted
