Through a notification uploaded on 13 November 2017 the FSSAI has invited suggestions, views and comments from stakeholders on the draft notification relating to revision in the sub-regulation “Restriction on sale of common salt” in the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on sales) Regulations, 2011.
Restriction on sale of common salt is a sub-regulation (2.3.12) under the regulation ‘Prohibition and Restriction on sale of certain products.’ Previously the regulation was as follows:
Restriction on sale of common salt – No person shall sell or offer or expose for sale or have in his premises for the purpose of sale, the common salt, for direct human consumption unless the same is iodized.
The FSSAI now proposes to revise the sub-regulation as follows:
Restriction on sale of common salt – No person shall sell or offer or expose for sale
or have in his premises for the purpose of sale, common salt, for direct human consumption or for use as an ingredient in a food product unless the same is iodized:
Provided that common salt may be sold or exposed for sale or stored for sale for
iodization, iron fortification, animal use, manufacturing medicines and industrial use,
under proper label declarations, as specified in the Regulation 2.4.5 (21 & 42) of Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) regulations, 2011.”
If the proposed draft is approved then FBOs that use salt as an ingredient in their food products will need to ensure that they are using only iodized common salt. This regulation has been revised to include the use of iodised salt as ingredient in food products to tackle the Government’s efforts to prevent Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) in the country. Accordingly all FBOs will have to ensure they use only iodised salt in keeping with FSSAI mandate and to help tackle micronutrient deficiency in the Indian population.
