In a new advisory issued on 4th August 2014, the FSSAI under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has once again extended the date for conversion/renewal of license/registration. According to the advisory, Food Business Operators who are seeking conversion or renewal of their existing licenses/registrations can now do so before 4th February 2015.
With the extension of the date to 4th February 2015, the FSSAI has again given a breather to the Food Business Operators. The food industry which includes milk and milk products, oil processing units, poultry and slaughtering businesses, meat processing units, food processing units, food importing units and includes Food Business Operators working in more than one state or one location within the state, the new deadline would provide them an ample time to get registered under FSS Act, 2006.
As per Food Safety and Standards (Licensing & Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, no person can carry out a food business unless he has a valid license. Any person who was carrying out food business on the date that the notification for the regulation came into existence had to get their previous license/ registration converted/renewed as per the new regulations. However, since the small as well as some big food operators found it difficult to understand the full implications of the regulations, the FSSAI in its discretion had already extended the date three times in the past from the initial date of 4th August 2012 and this present extension is for the fourth time.
Since the industry has requested the extension they should ensure that all licenses/registrations are converted/ renewed by the new date as awareness has now spread to a huge number of Food Business Operators many of whom have already converted/ renewed their licenses in compliance to Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006.
