In a dedicated effort to ensure the safety of fresh fruits and vegetables in the market, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a continued directive, emphasizing stringent monitoring practices.
Background and Previous Directives
This directive follows previous communications, particularly the one dated 03.04.2023, addressing the ‘Request for action against unauthorized use of artificial fruit ripening agents,’ and another dated 24.07.2023, regarding ‘Monitoring the sale of fresh fruits and vegetables in the markets.‘ These directives underscore FSSAI’s commitment to regulating the quality of fresh produce.
Targeting Menace: Excessive Pesticides and Unpermitted Substances
The current directive seeks to combat the prevalent issues of excess pesticide usage, non-permitted wax coating, unauthorized artificial ripeners, and artificial colors in fresh fruits and vegetables. State/UT authorities are urged to maintain a strict vigil over Food Business Operators (FBOs) involved in the manufacturing, re-packing, and distribution of fresh, surface-treated, or minimally processed fruits and vegetables.
Surveillance and Enforcement: Key Strategies
To achieve these objectives, surveillance and enforcement activities are recommended to be carried out in a planned manner. This ensures that the fruits and vegetables sold within their jurisdictions align with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and any associated rules or regulations.
Education and Awareness: Integral Components
In addition to monitoring, the directive highlights the significance of awareness-building measures through Information, Education & Communication (IEC) activities. These initiatives, conducted under the Eat Right India framework, aim to educate both Food Business Operators and consumers about the importance of adhering to food safety standards.
Competent Authority’s Approval and Commitment
This directive is issued with the approval of the Competent Authority, reiterating FSSAI’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of fresh produce in the market.
Moving Forward: Strengthening Food Safety Practices
As FSSAI continues to address challenges in the food industry, these directives underscore the authority’s proactive approach to safeguarding public health. The combined efforts of monitoring, enforcement, and education are pivotal in promoting a culture of food safety and adherence to regulatory standards.
