The FSSAI has issued new directions dated 24 August 2018 regarding the implementation of the Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Uses, Food for Special Medical Purposes, Functional Foods and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016.
Previously FSSAI had issued directions dated 29 June 2018 regarding the implementation of the Nutraceutical regulations where FBOs had been directed to discontinue the use of ingredients listed under Appendix-1 given below with immediate effect because of lack of data. No further manufacturing of products using these ingredients was to be permitted till such time as they had been assessed and approved by the Food Authority. The FBOs had also been directed to furnish information/data in respect of these ingredients within one month from the date of the issuance of the direction for further assessment by the Food Authority.
The ingredients that were not permitted for use are as follows
Appendix- 1
- Raspberry ketone
- Silica
- Angelica sinensis
- Paullinia cupana
- Saw palmetto
- Notoginseng
- Chlorella Growth factor
- Pine bark extracted from Pinus radiata
- Pine bark extract from Pinus pinaster
- Vitamin D3 (Veg)
- Chaga extract (Inonotus obliquus)
- Oxalobacter formigenes
- Phytavail iron
- Tee tree oil
Through the new August 24, 2018 direction FSSAI has clarified that since the above mentioned ingredients are under consideration of the FSSAI, it has, therefore, permitted products that use the above ingredients to be available in the market provided that
- These products containing the above mentioned ingredients have been manufactured up to 29 June 2018. No products with these ingredients may be manufactured beyond this date.
- These products will be allowed to be available in the market only up till such time that the Scientific Panel makes a final decision.
The FSSAI has further clarified that any products that contain any of the ingredients mentioned in Appendix 1 above may not be used beyond the date 29 June 2018 and no products can be allowed to be available in the market if the manufacturing is after this date. Therefore, FBOs must not manufacture any new products, containing these ingredients after the 29 June 2018 dateline.
