The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has implemented extensive measures to ensure safe and hygienic food for millions of devotees attending the MahaKumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj. Through the deployment of Mobile Food Testing Labs, Food Safety Officers, and awareness campaigns, FSSAI aims to safeguard public health during this grand religious gathering.
Mobile Food Testing Labs Deployed
FSSAI, in collaboration with the Food Safety and Drug Administration, Government of Uttar Pradesh, has deployed , also known as “Food Safety on Wheels,” across the MahaKumbh area. These labs are conducting on-the-spot testing of food items to detect adulteration and spoilage. Additionally, food analysts are educating Food Business Operators (FBOs), street vendors, and the general public about safe food practices.
Extensive Monitoring Across Sectors
The Maha Kumbh fair is divided into five zones and 25 sectors, with dedicated Food Safety Officers (FSOs) assigned to each sector. A total of 56 FSOs, including five Chief Food Safety Officers (CFSOs), have been deployed to oversee hygiene and food safety standards. Each sector is supervised by two FSOs, while each zone has a designated CFSO to ensure comprehensive coverage. Food safety operations are centrally managed from a dedicated office located at Sankat Mochan Marg in Sector 24, Prayagraj.
Regular Inspections of Food Establishments
Hotels, dhabas, and small food stalls within the fair premises are undergoing regular inspections. These inspections aim to verify food quality and ensure compliance with hygiene standards. Ground teams have been directed to address food safety complaints promptly and to take immediate action where necessary. Stringent checks are being conducted on cooking methods and the quality of raw materials used to prepare food.
Food Sampling and Testing
Samples of essential food items such as rice, sugar, and wheat flour, which are destined for the Maha Kumbh Mela area, are being regularly collected for testing. These samples are analyzed at the Regional Public Health Laboratory in Varanasi to ensure they meet quality standards. Distribution and storage points for food supplies have been identified, and regular monitoring is in place to maintain food safety.
Public Engagement and Awareness Initiatives
FSSAI has established an interactive pavilion at the Maha Kumbh Mela to engage with devotees and food vendors. The pavilion features various activities, including:
- Nukkad Natak Performances: Highlighting the importance of safe food practices.
- Live Quizzes: Focusing on food safety and nutrition to educate the public.
