As per the FSSAI Order issued on August 11, 2015, the time period for compliance for putting FSSAI Logo and License Number on the food package labels has yet again been extended for a further period of 6 months, till December 31, 2015. Therefore, the various Food Business Operators (FBO) will need to put the FSSAI Logo and License No. on the labels of the food products w.e.f. January 1, 2016. This extension has been given with due regard to the representation by the FBOs requesting for prior exhaustion of remaining stocks before commencing with the labeling.
The initial Order was issued by FSSAI on June 7, 2013 for giving the FSSAI Logo and License No. on the labels of food products. It is to be noted that the Brand Owner would have to display both the FSSAI Logo as well as the License No., whereas all other multiple units like manufacturer, packer, re-labeler, marketers would only need to display the License No. and their addresses.
The Food Safety and Standards Regulations (Packaging and Labeling) Regulations, 2011 has set out specific guidelines for the display of the FSSAI Logo.
- The size of the logo should be in correct proportion to the Area of the Principal Display Panel.
- The logo should be placed on a contrasting background on the package.
- It should be in close proximity to the Name or Brand Name of the product.
The Logo and License No. should be displayed thus:
FOR BRAND OWNER
License No. xxxxxxxxxxxxx
FOR MULTIPLE UNITS (manufacturer, packer, re-labeller, marketers)
License No. xxxxxxxxxxxxx
It should be noted that the FSSAI logo and License No. is not a certification on the part of FSSAI, but it implies that the FBO has a valid license for the product as per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
