The FSSAI has issued an order on 21 August 2018 through which it has extended the date for the use of non-detachable sticker carrying the FSSAI logo on imported organic foods.
All food products imported into India and which claim to be an organic need to comply with the applicable provisions laid down in the FSS Act, 2006 and regulations made thereunder in addition to the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards (Organic Foods) Regulations, 2017.
FSSAI had earlier issued directions dated 29 June 2017, wherein it had been decided to allow the use of non-detachable stickers in respect of FSSAI’s organic logo as the requirement of the FSSAI logo is mandatory under regulation 5 (1) of the Food Safety and Standards (Organic Foods) Regulations, 2017 up to 30 September 2018. The FSSAI has now extended the date for the use of non-detachable stickers with respect to FSSAI’s organic logo up to 31 December 2018 for imported food consignments.
The FSSAI has also said in the new order that import consignments claimed as organic and which were exported prior to 31 August 2018 may also be given relaxation for compliance of the Food Safety and Standards (Organic Foods) Regulation 2017. Earlier order had said that the consignments claimed as organic food items, which were exported from other countries before 01 July 2018, but which reached India after 1 July 2018 were to be given relaxation for compliance to the FSS (Organic Foods) Regulations, 2017.
All Food Business Operators were required to comply with the provisions of the Organic regulations by 1 July 2018. According to this order, except for the extension of the date for the non-detachable logo and the relaxation on compliance by 31 August 2018 all other conditions as given in the order dated 25 July 2018 and the directions dated 29 June 2017 will remain the same.
