Food Safety & Quality ensures that the food is safe and suitable for human consumption. With the globalization of the food trade, there was a need for the harmonization of the National & International standards to ensure safe food for the consumers. With this vision, The Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006 came into force and FSSSI the apex regulatory body on food in India was formed to regulate & successfully implement the diversified activities in different food chains who are involved in the manufacture, sale, distribution & import of food articles in India.
Program on Food Safety & Quality Management (Joint Initiative by APEDA & IGNOU)
IGNOU’s School of Agriculture (SOA) is running a distance learning program on Food Safety & Quality Management to develop capable human resources who can meet the growing Food Safety & Quality requirements of the food products for different industry verticals globally. This Post Graduate Program in Food Safety & Quality Management will help the students to comprehend the food safety & quality concerns during food manufacturing/processing, handling, transportation, storage etc. The course program will also benefit the students to build their technical proficiency and to learn the regulatory guidelines including the exports’ legal prerequisites.
The Post Graduate Diploma in Food Safety and Quality Management is a one year course which is a joint initiative by APEDA (Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) and IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University).
The program’s contents emphasize on the following practical development applications:
- Good Hygiene Practices (GHP)
- Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
- Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)
- Quality Management Systems (QMS): ISO 9001
- Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS): ISO 22000
- Environment Management Systems (ISO): ISO 14001
- Laboratory Management Systems (LMS): ISO 17025
- Retail Standards and to do the auditing as per the guidelines of ISO 19011-2002
- Standard Microbiological and Chemical Analysis of Food Products

Eligibility Requirements:
- Graduate in Science with Chemistry/Bio-Chemistry/Microbiology as one of the subjects
- Degree in allied Sciences like Agriculture/Food Science/Food Technology/Post Harvest Technology/Engineering/Home Science/ Life Science/Microbiology/Biochemistry/Biotechnology/Horticulture/Dairy Technology/ Veterinary/Fisheries/ Hotel Management and Catering/ Hospitality Management equivalent.
- Science graduate in disciplines like Geography, Statistics with Physics & Maths, Art Subjects and Medical Lab Technology with minimum three years’ experience in food processing and /or quality control. These students should have minimum one year experience in quality control activities.
- Art/Commerce graduates with Diploma in Food Sciences/Hotel Management disciplines viz. Fruits and Vegetables, Dairy Technology, Meat Technology, Cereals, Pulses and Oilseeds etc. with minimum five years’ experience in Food Processing/ Food Quality Control/Hotel Management and out of which two years’ experience should be in quality control activities.
- B.A./B.Com graduates with minimum of 7 years’ experience in Food Processing /Food Quality Control/ Hotel Management or holding the senior position in Govt. / Sem-Govt. Units involved in Food Quality Control.
