Starbucks India is moving away from plastic straws and cutlery as part of its environmental friendly initiative. They have introduced biodegradable compostable straws and cutlery made of wood as green alternatives. Some of the state governments have begun clamping down on the use of plastic especially for foods and beverages in India as plastic waste has a huge environmental impact. The change to non-plastic straws and cutlery has impacted the economics of Starbucks but the company feels that the initial cost will off-set over time with volumes.
Starbucks is also taking other measures for green alternatives where it has incentivised customers so they can get their own tumblers for beverages to the outlet. Starbucks is also going to use paper bags, glassware or ceramic options for items consumed in the store. Starbucks now has 121 stores in India and is now looking to expand into tier II and tier III where they intend to have smaller formats and differential pricing for growth.
