Through a notification dated 8 March 2019, the FSSAI has drafted amendments in the “Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018 regarding claims for edible vegetable oils vide. The purpose of such amendment is essential to address the issue of claims appearing on packages of oils without any logic or scientific rationale which largely lead to consumer misinformation.
The FSSAI has already notified the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018 pertaining to claims and advertisements by food business operators in respect of their food products. This amendment related to claims proposed by the FSSAI includes a suggestive positive list of claims for individual oils based on their intrinsic characteristics. FSSAI has invited suggestions and objections which must reach the FSSAI office by 18 April 2019. These amendments will be called the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Amendment Regulations,2019. They shall come into force on the date of their final publication in the official Gazette.
2. In the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018 the FSSAI has added the following in regulation 7 – Health Claims
- (2a) Claims including nutrient function claims for edible vegetable oils may be made as provided in Schedule – VI”
- In schedule-I, in table, in column (3) occurring against the Sl. No 11, relating to “Protein”, for the words “Source*”and “Rich / High *” the words “Source” and “Rich / High” shall be substituted
- The FSSAI has also added the following Schedule to the regulation
