Mother Dairy has been in the news for a few months now as Uttar Pradesh FDA has on occasions found their milk either substandard or contaminated. Mother Dairy has continuously been denying that their milk is substandard. In fact they said that samples collected at the village level were being wrongly ascribed to Mother Dairy. On each occasion that FDA found the milk to be contaminated, Mother Dairy has insisted that they follow stringent quality tests which enable them to detect adulterants like urea, detergent, oil, etc. They also say that they return all sourced milk that does not pass their quality tests.
The recent tests on samples collected by FDA on from Ghaziabad have shown that the milk was contaminated. Mother Dairy rejected the test reports and asked for a re-test of the samples at the Kolkata-based Central Food Laboratory. Now it seems that the Kolkata-based Central Food Laboratory has found detergent and frozen fat in the samples of milk that were re-tested. These recent samples had been collected by the FDA from the Mother Dairy booths in Ghaziabad.
Ghaziabad FDA says that the re-test reports that have been received from the Central laboratory Kolkata point to the fact that both samples of ‘full cream’ and also ‘toned’ milk were found to contain frozen fat and detergent. On 11 January this year, the district FDA team had collected samples of ‘full cream’ milk from a Mother Dairy booth situated at H-Block in Govindpuram. The ‘toned milk’ samples had been collected from Loni district on 30 January.
Initially the samples had been sent to a laboratory in Meerut which reported the samples as substandard and also that they contained some low fat. Mother Dairy had challenged the reports and had asked for a re-test of the samples. It now seems that even the Central Food Laboratory Kolkata has found the samples to be contaminated with detergent and the sample of ‘toned milk’ tested positive for frozen fat.
The test report has now been submitted to the District magistrate. Once the report is forwarded to the Commissioner seeking approval then legal action will be initiated against Mother Dairy.
Mother Dairy says that they have yet to receive the re-test report of the Kolkata-based Central Laboratory. Also Mother Dairy could seek legal recourse as they feel that there is discrepancy in the two test reports.
