With a view to ensure quality and safety of animal feed and silage, to ensure that pesticides, heavy metals and other contaminants are not present in such animal feeds so that they do not find their way in the food chain for humans via such food producing animals, FSSAI has issued a direction in this regard on December 10, 2019.
FSSAI has stated that the Commercial Feeds/Feed Materials which are intended for food producing animals shall have to comply with the relevant BIS Standards.
Whilst FSSAI is exploring the possibilities of introducing such Food Safety Standards for Animal Feeds by bringing in amendments to the Food Safety Act, as an interim measure, it has been decided that all such commercial feeds and feed materials shall comply with the relevant BIS Standards. Such products shall not be manufactured, imported, distributed and sold except under the Bureau of Indian Standards Certification Mark indicating compliance with relevant Indian Standards.
This Direction shall come into force after 6 (six) months from date of issue.
