FSSAI had issued a Draft Notification on 12th December 2018 for the proposed amendments in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations 2011, where the Food Authority invited for comments and suggestions from the concerned Stakeholders.
The purpose of the Amendment was to effect a reduction of sugar by deleting the “Total Soluble Solids” and its permissible values in the sub-regulations 2.3.9 (Thermally Processed Fruit Nectars), 2.3.10 (Thermally processed Fruit Beverages/Fruit Drink/Ready to serve Fruit Beverages) and 2.3.30 (Carbonated Fruit Beverages or Fruit Drinks).
The comments and suggestions from the stakeholders were discussed and finalized in the Scientific Panel and Scientific Committee, after which the FSSAI approved the final notification at its 28th meeting held on 21st May 2019.
The stakeholders had represented that while they were ready with the formulations with reduced sugar as desired by the FSSAI, they would release such Products only after the Gazette Notification had been issued.
As the formal Notification of these regulations would take some more time, it was directed that the same to be implemented with immediate effect by all the stakeholders, without waiting for the Gazette Notification.
