The FSSAI has issued a final notification on 23 August 2016 regarding the incorporation of the provisions related to food provided in the Atomic Energy (Radiation Processing of food and Allied Products) Rules, 2012 as also the labeling of such irradiated foods. The draft amendment was issued on 11 May 2016 when it was made public and issued in the Gazette. Taking into account the objections and suggestions received by the FSSAI the amended regulations have been added to the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. Once notified in the Official Gazette the regulations will come into force. The regulation dealing with ‘irradiated foods” will be called the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Sixth Amendment Regulations, 2016.
The final notification of the FSSAI deals with the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 relating to “Irradiation of Food”. The regulation will henceforth be called the RADIATION PROCESSING OF FOOD. No other foods except those mentioned in the tables given in the amended regulation will be permitted to go through the radiation process. The table also provides the doses permitted for use on the various permitted foods. All the records of dosing applied for radiation need to be maintained as per the Atomic Energy (Radiation Processing of Food and Allied Products) Rules, 2012. The FSSAI has also amended the labeling requirements of Radiation Processing of Foods through the amendment which will now be called Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Fourth Amendment Regulations, 2016. It will be mandatory for radiation processed foods to carry a statement indicating the type of irradiation process the food has undergone.
