Shan Spices from Pakistan Giving Competition to Indian Spices
Shan Spices from Pakistan are doing good business in India especially in the blended spices category used in non-vegetarian cooking. The best selling spices are those that are spicy and go well with sub continental dishes. With 50% of sales in this category Shan Spices are proving a stiff competition for Indian spice giant Everest. In fact seeing the success of Shan Spices FMCG major ITC is planning on entering this spices segment.
Shan’s spices are sold in retail outlets and also available through Amazon India. Shan has not run a marketing campaign in India yet shahi haleem mix, Bombay Biryani, chappli kebab mix, Lahori fish and nihari are found in Indian kitchens. This is because the spices offer a unique taste.
What began as a one room family spice business in 1981 has expanded into 65 countries and its CEO Sikander Sultan is known as the king of Pakistan’s packaged food industry. Shan Spices would like to have a subsidiary in India as customs duty on branded spices gives them a retail disadvantage. They would also like to expand into the vegetarian segment for blended spices.
