According to the latest notification from the Food Authority alcoholic beverages are not classified as single ingredient foods and so you will have to follow the labelling on such beverages according to FSS (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011. Both in the Codex Alimentarius and the Food Safety and Standards Act, Rules & Regulation, alcoholic beverages do not fall under the single ingredient category. However, labelling on such beverages could differ slightly from other similar food products.
- If alcoholic beverages contain additives like colour, water, preservatives etc. then they are not single ingredient products and so the labeling declaration must show these additives as ingredients as they will be present in the final product.
- Any specific flavouring used in alcoholic beverages need not be listed on the label though the fact that flavouring has been used must be mentioned on the label.
- In case the alcoholic beverage is a single ingredient product then ingredient does not have to be listed as it is then similar to other food products that use only a single ingredient.
According to FSS (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations 2011 there are certain specific labelling requirements that do not have to be declared on the labels of alcoholic beverages. These exemptions have been in force since 5th August 2011.
Alcoholic Beverages DO NOT require the following declaration on the label
a.) Best before date on
- Wines and liquors
- Alcoholic beverages that contain 10% or more volume of alcohol
