
Through a notification dated 8 February, 2021 the FSSAI has clarified some points related to the requirement of Non-GM cum GM free certificate to accompany imported food consignment.
The FSSAI has also drawn attention to its previous notifications dated 21 August 2020 and 03 December 2020 on the above- mentioned subject. The clarifications are as follows
- The requirement for Non-Gm cum GM free certificate is applicable to consignments which will be dispatched from the exporting country on or after 01 March 2021.
(In its order dated 3 December 2020 the FSSAI had extended the date from 1 January, 2021 to 1 March, 2021 for the requirement of Non-GM cum GM Free certificate to accompany certain food imports)
- The tolerance limit for adventitious presence (AP) of GMOs at 1% is permissible in imported food crop consignments as listed in Annexure 1 which was given in the order dated 20 August 2020. The names of these crops, as given in Annexure 1 are as follows
- Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa)
- Apple (Malus x Domestica)
- Argentina Canola (Brassica napus)
- Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris)
- Chicory (Cichorium intybus)
- Cowpea (Vigna (unguiculate)
- Egg Plant (Brinjal) Solanum melanogoa
- Flax seed Linumusitatissimum L
- Maize (Zea mays)
- Melon (Cucumis melo)
- Papaya (carica papaya)
- Pineapple (Ananas comosus)
- Plum (Prunus domestica)
- Polish Canola (Brassica rapa)
- Potato (Solanum tuberosum)
- Rice (Oryza sativa)
- Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L)
- Soybean (Glycine max)
- Squash (Cucurbita pepo)
- Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris)
- Sugarcane (Saccharum sp)
- Sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum)
- Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum)
- Wheat (Triticum aestivum)
Every consignment of these food items is to be accompanied by a Non-GM origin and GM free certificate which shall be issued by the Competent National Authority of the exporting country for these food items which will exported on or after 1 March, 2021.
