The FSSAI has issued directions dated 16 July, 2021 regarding Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). FSSAI has drawn reference to its earlier order dated 7 January 2020 wherein the FSSAI had specified the RDA values of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. (Hereafter it will be referred to as RDA 2010).
In wake of the fact that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has revised the nutrient requirements for Indians and has published the same as new RDAs in 2020 hence the FSSAI has decided to adopt the same. the FSSAI has provided a collated document (Hereafter it will be referred to as RDA 2020) in respect of the new RDA values of vitamins, minerals and amino acids as Annexure I and II below for reference and compliance.
The RDA 2020 shall come into force from 1 July 2023 for compliance. Till such time the Food Businesses may comply with either RDA 2010 or RDA 2020. However, from 1 July 2023 onwards only RDA 2020 shall be in force and must be compliable by food Businesses.
Further FSSAI has clarified that the report submitted by ICMR regarding Tolerable Upper Limits (TUL) of vitamins/ minerals which have been made available on the FSSAI website on 5 September 2018 is ONLY FOR INFOMRATION and NOT for use by Food Businesses.
