The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced an extension of the timeline for the FSSAI-NABL Integrated Assessment for laboratories. This decision follows the previous notices issued by the FSSAI on 3rd June, 2019, and 2nd September, 2022. The validity and recognition of laboratories notified by the FSSAI are now subject to certain conditions.
According to the latest announcement, the FSSAI will only accept fresh proposals for FSSAI recognition and notification from laboratories that have obtained accreditation under the FSSAI-NABL Integrated Assessment. This step ensures that laboratories meet the required standards for accurate and reliable testing of food products.
For laboratories that have already been notified under Section 43(1) and 43(2) of the FSS Act, 2006 by the FSSAI but have not yet obtained FSSAI-NABL Integrated assessment, there is a requirement to obtain it before the expiry of their NABL accreditation validity period or before 31st March 2024, whichever comes earlier. This extension provides an opportunity for these laboratories to comply with the FSSAI-NABL Integrated Assessment requirements within the specified timeframe.
The FSSAI-NABL Integrated Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation process that ensures laboratories adhere to the necessary quality and technical requirements set by both the FSSAI and the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). This integrated approach aims to enhance the accuracy, reliability, and credibility of food testing results, ultimately contributing to improved food safety and consumer protection.
The extension of the deadline for the FSSAI-NABL Integrated Assessment aligns with the FSSAI’s commitment to fostering a robust and reliable food testing ecosystem in India. By enforcing the requirement for accreditation under the integrated assessment, the FSSAI aims to raise the overall quality and integrity of laboratory testing practices in the country.
Laboratories seeking FSSAI recognition and notification are now urged to prioritize obtaining accreditation under the FSSAI-NABL Integrated Assessment. This accreditation demonstrates their competence and compliance with the prescribed standards, ensuring that their testing methods and results meet the highest levels of accuracy and reliability.
The extension of the deadline provides laboratories with additional time to complete the necessary processes and fulfill the requirements for FSSAI-NABL Integrated Assessment. It is important for laboratories to seize this opportunity and work towards obtaining the accreditation within the specified timeframe to maintain their recognition and validity as FSSAI notified laboratories.
The FSSAI remains committed to safeguarding public health by promoting stringent food safety standards and reliable testing practices. Through the implementation of the FSSAI-NABL Integrated Assessment, the authority aims to strengthen the food testing infrastructure in the country, enhance consumer confidence, and ensure the availability of safe and quality food products in the market.
Laboratories, industry stakeholders, and the public are encouraged to stay updated on the latest developments and requirements related to the FSSAI-NABL Integrated Assessment. The FSSAI will continue to provide guidance and support to laboratories throughout the accreditation process, enabling them to meet the necessary standards and contribute to the overall goal of ensuring safe and nutritious food for all.
This extension of the deadline for FSSAI-NABL Integrated Assessment reaffirms the FSSAI’s commitment to fostering a culture of quality, accuracy, and transparency in food testing laboratories. By adhering to these stringent requirements, laboratories play a crucial role in upholding food safety and protecting the well-being of consumers across the country.
