The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, on June 13, 2014 received an alert regarding the outbreak of Salmonellosis (Serotypes Newport and Hartford) in products that contain organic sprouted chia seed powder. The apex body has received the alert from International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) and which was also shared among all other concerned in India.
The brand name of the product that has caused the outbreak is Organic Traditions which is manufactured by Advantage Health Matters, Canada under food category – Products for Special Nutritional Use. The Salmonellosis was identified in USA and Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recalled the products.
The details of the recalled products which were imported into India are as follows:
1. Org. Sprouted Omega Chia/ Flax 227g, Lot number- BIO13SFCB273 and BIO13SFCB345
2. Org. Chia Seeds, Dark- 227g, Lot Number – ASCB013060101
3. Org. Ultimate Superfood Trail Mix- Lot Number AHMTRAIL-003-03 AND AHMTRAIL013-12.
Some of these products have also been exported to Bahrain, Iceland, Singapore and Slovenia.
Advantage Health Matters and Back 2 the Garden are two companies who recalled various products which were identified for the possible Salmonella Contamination.
‘Sai Nirman Trading PVT LTD’ is the Indian importer who was involved in the distribution of these products having address at: 3722/25, Netaji Subhash Marg, Daryaganj, Delhi.
What is Salmonellosis?
Salmonellosis is a type of food poisoning caused by Salmonella bacteria. The food may get contaminated during its processing as the Salmonella bacteria can enter into food through improper handling of the food.
Salmonella can cause illness in-between 6 to 72 hours after consumption of the infected food. The common symptoms of Salmonella infection; fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps and the illness may remain up to 7 days. In severe cases, Salmonellosis can cause death due to dehydration. The need of the treatment depends on the severity of symptoms.
According to WHO, there are tens of millions cases of Salmonellosis occur worldwide every year. The analysis of food can identify the potential pathogens present in food products.
Salmonella is commonly found in raw food products that come from animals, such as eggs, egg products, meat, meat products, unpasteurized milk, or other unpasteurized dairy products.
