The FSSAI has notified standards for caffeinated beverages and blue tint plastic containers through its notification dated 2 December 2016. These standards have been amended in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 relating to BEVERAGES NON –ALCOHOLIC -CARBONATED
The FSSAI standards state that
- Water used in the preparation of caffeinated beverages should conform to the standards of packaged drinking water in all parameters as specified in the regulations
- The essential composition will include caffeine not less than145mg per liter and not more than 300mg per liter
- The beverage may contain the following substances at the specified maximum levels of per day consumption:
- Taurine – 2000mg
- D-glucuronic-Ү-lactone – 1200mg
- Inositol – 100mg
- Pantothenic Acid – 10mg
- Any additional item or ingredient added will be subject to FSSAI approval based on safety assessment and substantiating scientific evidence.
- Label declaration will carry the words “consume not more than 500 ml per day”
- The maximum per day quantity of caffeinated beverage is as per package or serving. It the maximum per day quantity of the above-mentioned quantity is reached from one serving or one package then the declaration will be made on the package accordingly. Explanation: if taurine is used at 1000mg and D-glucuronic-Y-lactone at 300mg in a 250ml pack the per day quantity is reached by consuming 2×250ml packs and represents the one-day quantity. If the pack size is a 125ml bottle, then per day quantity is reached by consuming 4×125ml bottles.
- Prominent display of caution “Not recommended for children, pregnant or lactating women, persons sensitive to caffeine.”
Standards for Blue Tint
FSSAI has permitted the use of Blue tint as provided in Indian Standard, IS: 9833 in five liters and above polycarbonate and Poly Ethylene Terephthalate (PET) packaging used for mineral water. However, migration of pigment/ color used in the container should not exceed 60 mg/ liter as per IS: 9845.
Proposed amendment for hydrocyanic acid in flours
FSSAI has proposed amendments in the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011 relating to “Crop contaminants and naturally occurring toxic substances”, in the category “Naturally occurring toxic substances”, the maximum level of Hydrocyanic acid in Sago, Cassava flour, Tapioca flour, Manihot flour and their products has been proposed to be a maximum of 10 ppm.
