Through its direction dated 8 November 2017, the FSSAI has extended the date for declaration of class title on food products. Declaration of class title and fats on food labels was to have come into force by 30 September 2017 but this time round the FSSAI has extended the date only for the declaration of class titles on food products.
Through a notification dated 25 May 2016 the FSSAI had made amendments to the regulations called the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Second Amendment Regulations, 2016. FSSAI had made it mandatory to declare the class title of edible vegetable oils like mustard oil, groundnut oil etc. on labels of edible vegetable oil products. As for vegetable fat, the FBOs had to mention the type of vegetable fat as interesterified vegetable fat, hydrogenated oils or partially hydrogenated oils. Also, they had to identify the edible vegetable fat in margarine or fat spreads as mixed fat spreads, vegetable fat spreads.
The FSSAI had earlier stated that the 30 September 2017 deadline would be last time it was extending the date for declaration of class titles, trans fat content, saturated fat content on the label of food products. The stakeholders have sent representations to the FSSAI appealing to extend the date of compliance with class titles. The extension of timeline would help the stakeholders liquidate their existing stock of food products. After due consideration of this request, the FSSAI has decided to extend the date for the mandatory declaration of class titles on food products further to 31 December 2017.
FSSAI has sent directions to all Food Safety Commissioners, Authorised Officers of the FSSAI, as well as All-Central Designated Officers of the FSSAI regarding the further extension of the date for declaration of class titles on food products.
