In a decisive move, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has invoked Section 16(5) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, to immediately put into effect the Draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations. These regulations specifically address the standards for Vitamin and Mineral Premix used in the production of Fortified Rice Kernels (FRK).
Swift Implementation Amidst Regulatory Process
While the formal process of drafting, receiving stakeholder comments, and finalizing the amendment regulations is underway, the FSSAI has prioritized the operationalization of provisions related to micronutrient limits in Vitamin and Mineral Premix for FRK. This proactive step aims to fortify the National level fortification program promptly.
Focus on Micro Nutrient Limits
The operationalization specifically addresses the limits of micronutrients in Vitamin and Mineral Premix for FRK, considering a 2% rate of addition during the manufacturing process. This move underscores the commitment to enhancing the nutritional quality of fortified rice and aligning with global standards.
Authority’s Approval and Legal Framework
The FSSAI’s action has received approval from the Competent Authority, exercising powers conferred under Section 18(2)(d) read with Section 16(5) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. This ensures a legally sound and expedited implementation of crucial regulations for the benefit of public health.
Conclusion: Advancing Nutritional Standards
With this expedited operationalization, FSSAI reinforces its dedication to advancing nutritional standards in staple foods, ensuring a nationwide swift and effective fortification program. This proactive approach aligns with FSSAI’s commitment to the well-being of the Indian population.
