Through a notification dated 28 March 2018, the FSSAI has invited inputs, comments, and suggestions from stakeholders on all aspects related to the artificial ripening of fruit. These inputs and suggestions would help the FSSAI formulate a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that would deal with the modalities for using Ethylene gas in the artificial ripening of fruit.
Through a notification dated 23 August 2016, the FSSAI had made amendments in the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations 2011 regarding the inclusion of Ethylene gas for ripening of fruits. The FSSAI had permitted the use of Ethylene gas in the artificial ripening of fruits with a proviso that ethylene gas may be used provided that fruits may be artificially ripened by use of Ethylene gas at a concentration up to 100 ppm (0.01µl/L) depending upon the crop, variety, and maturity.
Since then stakeholders have raised several issues relating to the modalities of use of ethylene gas for artificial ripening of fruit. FSSAI has, therefore, constituted a Working Group which is working on developing a Standard Operating Procedure dealing with the modalities for use of ethylene gas in the artificial ripening of fruit.
Of stakeholders have any suggestions and comments on the aspects to be covered in the SOP then they may send in their inputs to Advisor (Standards) on the email Id [email protected] or Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, FDA Bhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi – 110002.
