Regarding the shelf life of Fortified Rice (FR) and Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK), the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has brought to the attention of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) that certain Certificate of Analysis (CoA) documents issued by FRK manufacturers indicate an expiration date. FCI has also communicated that the quantity of fortified rice procurement exceeds the annual requirement of NFSA/OWS schemes, resulting in a surplus stored for over a year.
Furthermore, FCI has informed that an ongoing study to ascertain the shelf life of FR and FRK is currently underway and is expected to extend beyond two years for completion.
Given these circumstances, to prevent any potential uncertainty regarding the shelf life of FR and FRK, all FSSAI-notified laboratories are advised to refrain from specifying expiry dates or any related shelf life information for FR and FRK until further instructions are issued by the Food Authority.
This communication serves to inform concerned stakeholders and prompt necessary action.
