While a further extension by another 6 months is given to the FBOs seeking conversion/renewal of their licenses under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the Apex body FSSAI has recently shared the data on the licenses and registrations recorded till February 4, 2014. FSSAI released a list of all states and Union Territories along with the number of applications processed for licensing and registration.
As per the data from the report, Maharashtra topped the chart for the highest number of licenses and registrations in the state. There were 1,41,777 licenses issued along with 4,62,809 registration certificates awarded to the food business operators. The state of Maharashtra has been in news since long time on implementation of food safety standards and the state food department and FBOs both deserve appreciation as this is a good move in the direction of providing safe food to the people.
Rajasthan recorded the second highest number of licenses issued (55,425) while Tamil Nadu (35,927) is the third largest state in terms of number of licenses issued. Gujarat with 31,266 licenses, Uttar Pradesh with 30,957 licenses and Andhra Pradesh with 28, 918 are the other states who were the highlight in the list.
On registration certificates issued, Tamil Nadu appears at the 2nd spot with 2,32,176 registrations, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 1,86,199 and Ma dhya Pradesh with 1,74,927.
In Delhi 645 licenses were issued and no application for registration was processed as the process of registration is yet to be started in Delhi. The records show that no license and registration has taken place in Lakshadweep.
It should be noted here that the extension period of six months as per the latest advisory by FSSAI only applies to those who have their food businesses registered under the laws/orders prior to Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
For all others February 4, 2014 was the last date of licensing and registration and they may face action under the provisions of penalty for running business without a license/registration. For new businesses, there is no last date and food business operators can apply for the license/registration and should only commence business once they hear from the competent authority.
