The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has recently addressed concerns regarding the interpretation of regulations governing the display of information by Food Service Establishments. Some establishments have faced license suspensions due to alleged misinterpretation of the guidelines.
In response to these concerns, FSSAI clarified the provisions outlined in the FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020. These regulations allow Food Service Establishments to display information such as calorific value, food allergens, and veg or non-veg logos through various methods.
According to the regulations
- Food Service Establishments with central licenses or outlets at 10 or more locations are required to mention the calorific value per serving (in kcal) and serving size on menu cards, boards, or booklets.
- These establishments must also display information regarding food allergens and logos for veg or non-veg on menu cards or boards.
- Nutritional information, specific requirements prescribed under the regulations, and information regarding organic food or ingredients must be provided upon consumer request in the form of booklets, handouts, or on the establishment’s website.
- E-commerce Food Business Operators are responsible for obtaining the above information from respective Food Business Operators and providing it on their websites where applicable.
Food Service Establishments have the flexibility to choose any method for providing the required information, including menu cards, boards, booklets, or handouts.
Additionally, the FSSAI has issued an order regarding the display of information on e-commerce websites, dated 14.06.2022.
Licensing Authorities are advised to diligently adhere to these provisions and refrain from taking unnecessary actions, such as issuing notices or suspending licenses, if the establishments are compliant with the specified regulations.
